AliExpress vs Temu for Saudi Arabia Resellers 2026: Which Platform Wins?
Saudi resellers have two primary China-sourcing channels in 2026: AliExpress for long-tail SKU depth, supplier negotiation, and catalogue variety; Temu for fast-moving curated products at fixed low prices. This article resolves which platform fits which Saudi sales channel — Noon.com, Amazon.sa, Salla/Zid, or Instagram/WhatsApp — and covers the payment, VAT, and customs specifics that trip up Saudi buyers.
Platform model
AliExpress is an open marketplace of independent Chinese suppliers. MOQ and unit price are negotiable; direct supplier chat is available before and after purchase. Listings span virtually every product category at varying quality tiers. Temu operates as a fixed-price retailer — no supplier contact, no MOQ negotiation, curated trending SKUs at the lowest published price. Both platforms ship direct to Saudi Arabia, but the operational model for a reseller is fundamentally different.
AliExpress vs Temu: head-to-head for Saudi Arabia
| Feature | AliExpress | Temu |
|---|---|---|
| Product variety | Very high — millions of SKUs across all categories | Curated selection, trending lifestyle and fashion focus |
| Minimum order | 1 unit (supplier-dependent; bulk discounts negotiable) | 1 unit, fixed — no MOQ negotiation |
| Shipping to Saudi Arabia | Standard (15–30 days), AliExpress Standard Shipping, DHL/FedEx available | Temu standard shipping (10–20 days); express available |
| Tracking reliability | Variable by supplier; premium shipping tiers reliable | Consistent within Temu's own logistics |
| Supplier contact | Direct chat before and after order | None — Temu customer support only |
| Price floor | Negotiable at volume; unit price drops with quantity | Fixed — no volume discount at checkout |
| Return/refund policy | Dispute resolution via AliExpress; 15–60 day windows vary by seller | Centralised returns via Temu app; generally 90-day window |
| Promo codes | Saudi Arabia has its own code pool (not the global AFSO* series) — see Summer Sale promo codes page | Separate Temu coupon system; no cross-platform codes |
Payment methods for Saudi Arabia
What does not work
mada cannot be used at AliExpress or Temu international checkout. mada is Saudi Arabia's national debit network and is not enabled for cross-border transactions by design. A mada-only debit card will be declined at both platforms regardless of balance.
STC Pay wallet (the in-app balance or QR function) does not work at AliExpress. If you hold an STC Pay physical Mastercard, you can enter the card number directly at checkout — but the app-based payment flow will not complete.
What works
The following Saudi-issued cards process reliably at AliExpress and Temu:
- Al Rajhi Bank Visa or Mastercard
- Riyad Bank Visa
- Banque Saudi Fransi Visa
- SABB (Saudi British Bank / HSBC) Mastercard
- Al Bilad Bank Visa
Before your first purchase, verify that international online transactions are enabled. Many Saudi banks ship cards with this flag off by default. Activation is typically a 30-second toggle in the mobile banking app or a call to the card centre.
Currency
AliExpress charges in USD for Saudi Arabia shipping addresses. The Saudi Riyal is pegged to the US Dollar at 3.75 SAR/USD. Your bank converts at this fixed rate and may add a foreign currency processing fee of 1–2% depending on the card product.
Saudi Arabia customs and VAT (ZATCA)
VAT 15%
Saudi Arabia raised VAT from 5% to 15% in July 2020. AliExpress is registered as an overseas vendor under the ZATCA remote seller framework and collects 15% VAT at checkout on all orders shipped to Saudi addresses. The VAT amount appears as a separate line item before you confirm payment.
Customs duty exemption: SAR 1,000 threshold (~$267 USD)
Personal imports with a declared CIF (cost plus insurance plus freight) value below SAR 1,000 are exempt from customs duty. VAT 15% applies on all orders regardless of value — the threshold covers duty only, not VAT.
Above SAR 1,000
When the declared CIF value exceeds SAR 1,000, customs duty is assessed by HS code on top of VAT 15%. Indicative rates: electronics 0–5%, clothing 5–15%, accessories 5–7%, home goods 5%. Actual rates depend on the specific HS classification applied by ZATCA at clearance.
Commercial import note
Orders that appear to be for resale rather than personal use may be reclassified by ZATCA as commercial imports, which removes the SAR 1,000 exemption and applies full commercial import duties. Resellers importing in meaningful volumes should work with a Saudi-licensed freight forwarder and prepare proper commercial import documentation (commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin where required).
Which platform wins by sales channel
Noon.com — AliExpress wins for sourcing differentiated SKUs not already in Noon's catalogue. If Temu expands its direct Saudi retail presence, commodity items sourced from Temu could be undercut by Temu selling direct. Validate Noon competition before building a listing around a Temu-sourced product.
Amazon.sa — AliExpress wins. FBA compliance on Amazon.sa requires supplier-level commercial invoice documentation and HS code transparency. Temu's closed supplier model cannot provide that documentation chain.
Salla / Zid (Saudi D2C storefronts) — AliExpress wins for unique sourcing that differentiates your store; Temu is useful for fast-mover lifestyle categories where you want to test sell-through at low entry cost.
Instagram / WhatsApp reseller channels — AliExpress wins on SKU range and negotiated unit pricing for repeat sellers. Temu suits quick testing of trending items before committing to a supplier relationship on AliExpress.
618 and sale season: check price history
During AliExpress sale events — 618 and the Summer Sale — some sellers inflate the shelf price before applying the promotional badge, so the nominal "discount" is not real. Before committing to a bulk order, verify 90-day price history. The full sourcing guide is at AliExpress 618 Sale 2026 guide. Saudi resellers ordering seasonal volumes are particularly exposed because order sizes are larger and returns from Saudi Arabia carry higher shipping cost.

FAQ
Can I use mada to pay on AliExpress?
No. mada is Saudi Arabia's domestic debit network and cannot process international cross-border transactions. A mada-only card will be declined at checkout. Use an Al Rajhi, Riyad Bank, Saudi Fransi, SABB, or Al Bilad card with an international Visa or Mastercard network logo, and confirm that international online transactions are activated on the card.
Does AliExpress collect VAT for Saudi Arabia orders?
Yes. AliExpress is registered under ZATCA's overseas vendor scheme and collects 15% VAT at checkout on all orders shipped to Saudi Arabia. The VAT appears as a separate line before payment confirmation. You cannot avoid it by splitting orders — VAT applies per shipment regardless of value.
Does AliExpress charge in SAR or USD for Saudi Arabia?
AliExpress charges in USD for Saudi Arabia shipping addresses. The SAR/USD rate is fixed by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) at 3.75 SAR per USD, so price predictability is high. Your bank may add a foreign currency processing fee of 1–2% on top of the exchange rate.
