AliExpress vs Temu for Singapore Resellers in 2026: Which Platform Wins?

AliShopping Tools TeamJune 8, 20266 min read

Singapore is one of Southeast Asia's most active cross-border e-commerce markets. Many Singaporean buyers on AliExpress and Temu source inventory for Shopee SG listings, Lazada stores, or Carousell resale — or shop for personal items cheaper than local retail. Platform choice affects both your margins and how GST is handled. Two things to know upfront: PayNow, PayLah!, and DBS PayLah do not work on either platform. Since January 2023, GST 9% applies to all imported goods — including every AliExpress order shipped to a Singapore address.

Platform Model: How They Differ

AliExpress is an open marketplace with 100M+ products listed by individual sellers. You can chat directly with suppliers, negotiate MOQ, and sometimes request neutral or custom packaging. For Shopee SG and Lazada sellers who need volume flexibility and supplier relationships, AliExpress is the practical choice.

Temu operates a closed, curated catalog of around 10M products. There is no direct supplier contact, no MOQ negotiation, and no custom packaging. Temu controls the supply chain end-to-end. This model is useful for buying one-unit samples at the lowest possible unit cost, but it limits resellers who need consistent bulk restocking.

Payments in Singapore: What Actually Works

Both platforms require an international Visa or Mastercard. Singapore's domestic instant payment rails — PayNow (the inter-bank QR system), DBS PayLah!, and GrabPay — are not accepted on AliExpress or Temu for international purchases.

Cards that work reliably: DBS Visa/Mastercard, OCBC, UOB, Standard Chartered Singapore, Citibank Singapore, and HSBC Singapore. Most Singapore-issued cards have international transactions enabled by default, but check your banking app if a payment is declined.

AliExpress charges in USD. Your bank converts at the daily USD/SGD rate plus an FX spread — typically 0.5–1.5% on Singapore bank cards. At the mid-2026 indicative rate of approximately S$1.35/USD, a US$50 order lands at roughly S$68–69 before GST. PayPal is also accepted on AliExpress if your PayPal account is linked to a Singapore bank card.

GST 9%: What Singapore Buyers Must Know

Since January 1, 2023, Singapore removed the S$400 GST relief threshold for imported low-value goods. All imported goods are now subject to 9% GST regardless of declared value. There is no de minimis exemption.

For AliExpress specifically: AliExpress is registered under Singapore's OVR (Overseas Vendor Registration) scheme. This means AliExpress collects GST 9% directly at checkout for Singapore shipping addresses. You will see it added to your cart total before you pay. Temu is also OVR-registered and applies the same GST at checkout.

For Shopee SG and Lazada resellers, the practical implication is straightforward: your landed cost from AliExpress already includes GST 9% built into the checkout figure. Factor this into your resale margin before listing on Shopee. A product priced at US$10 (approximately S$13.50) on AliExpress arrives at your cart as roughly S$14.71 after GST — before shipping.

There is no mechanism to reclaim GST on personal imports. GST-registered businesses purchasing for business purposes may be able to claim input tax credits with proper documentation.

Which Platform Wins for Shopee SG and Lazada Sellers

For Shopee SG and Lazada Singapore sellers, AliExpress is the stronger sourcing platform because:

  1. Product variety maps closely to top-selling Shopee SG categories: electronics accessories, home decor, fashion, beauty, and gadgets.
  2. Orders of 10–50 units of a specific variant are achievable, which Temu cannot support.
  3. Price negotiation on orders of 50+ units is feasible with responsive suppliers.
  4. AliExpress seller ratings, buyer protection, and dispute resolution provide recourse for quality or logistics issues.

Temu serves a different function in a Singapore reseller workflow: one-unit product sampling at the lowest possible unit cost before committing to an AliExpress bulk order for Shopee or Lazada inventory.

Recommended workflow: Order 1 unit on Temu for quality check. If quality is acceptable, source 10–100 units on AliExpress for your Shopee SG or Lazada store.

Price History Before Bulk Orders (618 Timing)

AliExpress 618 sale runs June 16–20. Before placing any bulk sourcing order during the sale, verify 90-day price history. Sellers routinely inflate base prices ahead of promotional events — a "40% off" badge may reflect an inflated pre-sale baseline, not the actual historical price.

For Singapore resellers, overpaying on AliExpress directly compresses your Shopee SG margin. Checking price history before committing to a bulk order takes two minutes and can protect several percentage points of margin per SKU.

FAQ

Can I use PayNow or PayLah! to pay on AliExpress from Singapore?

No. PayNow and PayLah! (including DBS PayLah!) are domestic Singapore payment rails and are not accepted on AliExpress or Temu for international purchases. You need a Visa or Mastercard issued by a Singapore bank (DBS, OCBC, UOB, Standard Chartered, Citibank, HSBC). PayPal linked to a Singapore bank card is also accepted on AliExpress.

Does AliExpress charge GST for Singapore orders?

Yes. AliExpress is registered under Singapore's OVR (Overseas Vendor Registration) scheme and collects GST 9% at checkout for Singapore shipping addresses. The GST amount appears as a line item in your cart before payment. Since January 1, 2023, all imported goods — regardless of value — are subject to GST 9%. There is no longer any de minimis threshold.

Which platform is better for sourcing phone accessories for Shopee SG?

AliExpress is the better choice for phone accessory sourcing. The product catalog is broader, covers more device models and variant colors, and sellers will discuss orders of 10–50 units with pricing adjustments. Temu's curated catalog is narrower and does not support volume discussions. Use Temu only for 1-unit sampling of a new accessory type before committing to AliExpress inventory.
